HOG ROASTS FROM BIG ROAST
A stalwark of medeival banquets, the hog roast is the most common form of spit roast cooked in the UK. We take a whole pig – gutted and cleaned – and set in on a spit within one of our custom made spit roasters. These roasters are produced for us under licence in the United Kingdom and have been specifically designed to balance the meat and ensure even cooking.
Our Hog roasts are ideally suited to outdoor/ marquee venues and do not require an electrical power source. However, the weatherproof nature of our hog roast machine allows outdoor cooking before moving indoors to carve and serve during inclement weather.
If you let us know how many people you need to cater for we will provide a suitable hog that will ensure that all your guests are well fed. Our rule of thumb for catering for events is allowing for around a minimum of 200g of meat per person.
Given that the maximum size of hog that is cookable on our machines is around 55kgs, and that about 65% of a hog is edible meat. This would mean that this hog would provide around 35.75 kilos of meat. Spread out over 100 people this allows for around 357 grammes per meat eater which is more than ample and allows for second servings for some. Smaller hogs can be provided for small events but our costs unfortunately remain the same.It is also important to estimate how many vegetarians and children you have as this will mean that the amount of meat will spread further amoung people.
A hog roast is the longest event - and customers should allow around seven hours from our arrival until all food served to customers. A normal event will take the following structure -
1. We arrive about seven hours before serving.
2. After our initial set up, the hog takes about 5 hours to be cooked on the spit roast.
3. Our experienced chef will take an hour to cut the meat from the bone.
4. We recommend serving the hog straight from the machine to keep it nice and warm, and serving around takes around
5. We serve our hog with apple sauce and customers can choose to serve themselves salad and rolls.
6. We wash our spit roast at the customer premises and leave people to their event.
